Smart switches can add app control, schedules, dimming, motion sensing, voice control, and automation to regular lights. But before buying one, the most important question is usually hidden inside the wall box: does the switch location have a neutral wire?

What does the neutral wire do?

How can you tell if a switch box has a neutral wire?

Many homeowners look for a bundle of white wires in the back of the box. That can be a clue, but it is not enough by itself. Older switch loops and repurposed white wires can make the wiring confusing.
