What Causes a Burning Smell From an Outlet?

A burning smell near an outlet is one of those electrical warning signs that should not be ignored. Sometimes the cause is a damaged plug or an overheated device. Other times, the smell is coming from a loose wire, worn receptacle, overloaded circuit, or a problem hidden behind the wall plate.

First, what does a burning smell from an outlet usually mean?

A burning smell usually means something is getting too hot. Around an outlet, that heat may be coming from the device plugged in, the plug blades, the receptacle contacts, the wiring connection behind the outlet, or the circuit itself.

The smell can be faint at first. It may smell like hot plastic, melting insulation, smoke, burnt dust, or an electrical “ozone” type odor. Even if you do not see smoke, the smell is still worth taking seriously.

The safest mindset is simple: a burning smell is not a normal outlet behavior. Stop using the outlet until you know where the heat is coming from.

Common causes of a burning smell from an outlet
